Is this a Christmas memory of yours? An unaccompanied treble voice singing these words, the voice rising clear up to fill the church, uplift the soul and to begin the service of Nine lessons and Carols at Christmas. The Anglican Service of Nine Lessons And Carols is not very old – it began in 1918 in Cambridge, England where it came to replace the much older tradition of the church choir singing through the village streets on Christmas eve. While it is not a very old tradition, for many today it is a cherished memory of family and celebration from childhood and looked forward to each year. But it’s no longer so easy to find such a service here in regional Queensland. This is why the upcoming Service Of Nine Lessons And Carols at the end of this November, will be warmly received. The carols, a selection of favourites for both congregation and choir, will be performed by the outstanding voices of the Sunshine Coast Choral society.
Members of the Choir will read the Nine Lessons, which are the same each year as in 1918. They tell the Christian story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus and are taken from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels.
The service will be at the Holy Trinity Kawana Anglican Church By The Lake at Bokarina, on Wednesday the 28th November at 6.30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation for the church to support it community care projects.
